Edmund Oldfield (December 24, 1816 – February 1885) was born in London on December 24, 1816, the second son of Thomas Brame Oldfield (1788–1848) and Emma Young Oldfield (1794–1867). He had a brother, William Langston Oldfield (1818–1849), as well as Edward C. Oldfield. His early education included private schooling in Kent and attendance at Mill Hill School in London.
He entered Trinity College, Cambridge, as a pensioner on June 12, 1834, at the age of 18, matriculating that October and later associating with the Cambridge Apostles. He subsequently migrated to Worcester College, Oxford, matriculating on May 11, 1837, at age 20. He served as a scholar from 1837 to 1840, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1839, received his Master of Arts (MA) in 1841, and held a Fellowship at Worcester College from 1840 to 1873.
Admitted to the Inner Temple on May 29, 1839, Oldfield was called to the Bar on June 10, 1842. Blending his legal training with deep antiquarian interests, he became a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (FSA) and worked as an assistant in the Department of Antiquities at the British Museum from 1848 to 1861. Later, he served as private secretary to the Right Honourable A.H. Layard, First Commissioner of Works, during 1868–1869.
On July 30, 1872, he married the Honourable Susan Harriet Pitt-Rivers (1835–1920), daughter of George Pitt-Rivers, 4th Baron Rivers.
Later in life, Oldfield resided in Torquay, Devon. He passed away on April 11, 1902 at the age of 85 and was buried at St. Mary's Churchyard in Iwerne Stepleton, Dorset, England.
